Something lights up. You tap it. The gap between those two moments — measured in milliseconds — is your reaction time, and it is one of the oldest, cleanest numbers in gaming. It needs no rulebook and no tutorial: smaller is better, and everyone instantly wants to know theirs. Divided is built on that number. Two of them, actually — one per thumb.
The number to beat: about 200 milliseconds
Sit a person in front of a screen, flash a light, and ask them to hit a button the instant they see it. Most people land somewhere around 200–250 milliseconds — roughly a fifth of a second. That figure has been measured over and over for more than a century, ever since laboratories first started timing people with precision clocks, and it holds up remarkably well across simple click-the-dot tests you can find all over the internet today.
Treat that number the way an arcade treats it, not the way a clinic would. It is not a diagnosis — it's a lap time. It drifts with sleep, coffee, age, and how warmed up you are, and it responds to practice on the specific task you're practicing. Which is exactly what makes it such a satisfying thing to chase: it's honest, it's repeatable, and today's number is beatable tomorrow.
One more thing worth knowing: a single reaction time is almost meaningless. Everyone produces a spread — a fast tap here, a sleepy one there. The interesting numbers are the ones that describe the whole spread: your typical (median) time, your worst-case stragglers, your best-ever flash of speed. Any game that shows you one average and calls it a day is throwing away the story.
What the pros do with a fifth of a second
Formula 1 starts are a reaction-time ritual watched by millions. Five red lights come on one by one above the grid, hold, and then go out — and the moment they go out, twenty drivers launch. A good F1 start reaction is commonly around two tenths of a second, and the difference between a great launch and a sluggish one is measured in hundredths. Jump before the lights go out and it's a penalty: the sport polices the very number we're talking about.
Sprinting polices it even harder. Under World Athletics rules, a sprinter who pushes off the blocks less than 100 milliseconds after the gun is charged with a false start — the sport's position being that no human can genuinely react that fast, so anything under a tenth of a second must have been a guess. An entire Olympic discipline draws its legal line straight through human reaction time.
Esports turned it into a career stat. The flick shot — snapping the crosshair onto a target the instant it appears — is reaction time plus precision, executed thousands of times per match. It's why competitive players obsess over 240 Hz monitors and input latency: when your raw reaction is a couple hundred milliseconds, every millisecond the hardware wastes is a millisecond you can't win back. In that world, reaction time isn't trivia. It's the scoreboard behind the scoreboard.
One number per thumb
Here is the part that classic reaction tests skip: you have two hands, and they are not the same. Your dominant thumb has spent a lifetime getting more reps than the other one. Ask both to perform and you'll usually find a gap — a measurable, personal asymmetry that a single-button test can never show you.
Divided is a split-screen arcade game played in landscape, gripped like a gamepad: each half of the screen has its own d-pad of four buttons and its own stream of prompts, and each thumb answers only its own side. Because every prompt and every tap is timestamped, the game doesn't just hand you one blended average at the buzzer. It keeps separate reaction-time stats for each side — your typical time, your 90th-percentile stragglers, your single fastest hit — plus the head-to-head: how many milliseconds your left thumb concedes to your right (or, for a surprising number of players, the other way around).
That per-thumb split turns one score into a rivalry. Your fast hand sets the bar; your slow hand chases it. And because both streams run at once — each side fires on its own clock, indifferent to the other — you're not measuring your thumbs in comfortable isolation. You're measuring them the hard way: while each one is busy, mid-round, with sixty seconds on the timer and a streak on the line.
